Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN became my hero, my spiritual guide in February 2005, even though she died at the hands of hired hit men in Para Brazil . I had never heard of her until I read of her murder that year but her life has provided me with a screen through which I see much of the world today.
It didn’t happen fast. At first I was outraged that someone would kill a nun in cold blood, a nun who was a member of the order Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur who taught me in the 1960’s at Trinity University in Washington DC. I just felt I had to know what happened. Soon I knew I had to write about her.
And I did. And in the process of writing the book, A Journey of Courage, the Amazing Story of Sister Dorothy Stang, I read more than a hundred of her letters, parts of which I will be excerpting in future posts.
I also spent time with her Sisters in Ohio and in Brazil. Some are still doing social justice and human rights work there and others are doing so right here in the US. They are also amazing women. I want to share their stories and, share their inspiration too. I hope it pleases you!

Thank you, Michele. So Beautifully written, you’ve allowed us to really understand your own journey as well.
Michele:
I look forward to reading stories about Dorothy Stang and of your advocacy of human rights and social justice.
