I was both surprised and delighted to see this news…about the flag bearer for Brazil at the Olympics. The President of Brazil is angered by Marina Silva being chosen by the Olympic committee as one of the flag bearers for her country. You can see the group in this clip; here is a full head shot.

What is Capitol Hill Day and the CNCS? And what do I, a writer, have to do with them and AmeriCorps and NDMVA? Give me a minute to explain….
In 2011, I gave a talk about Sister Dorothy and a writing workshop to a conference of college grads and community members of Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, AmeriCorps. I talked about Dorothy as a model educator and I sold some books. That fall I became a board member of NDMVA.

When I was in Brazil in 2007, gathering information about Sr. Dorothy Stang,
I met these five wonderful young women.They were and are in formation which is nun-talk for thinking about and starting the journey to become full fledged Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
One of them — after finding out I had only one son, announced, “Michele-y, you have no daughters, we will be your Brazilian daughters!” This coming week , after 5 years, I will meet one of them in New York city. We have already skyped about the basics, how and where each ... (read more)

That’s exactly it – they are following their Sister Dorothy to work to save the Earth for all people! 20 years ago Dorothy Stang was invited to the very first UN summit on the environment, also held in Rio to participate as a delegate for her belief and her work against deforestation of the Amazon.
And while she had a place in the halls with dignitaries and spokespersons, she typically made her mark in the streets demonstrating with those whose voices were not to be heard by elites.
